Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay

Designed to reduce the need for glasses by improving near vision

Age related loss of near vision, or presbyopia, happens when your natural lens loses elasticity, making it difficult to change your focus to see objects up close. Everyone – yes, everyone – will eventually experience presbyopia, making it difficult to perform daily activities, such as reading or looking at a cell phone without glasses.

Raindrop is a safe way to improve near vision. The tiny inlay, about the size of a pinhead, can be placed just beneath the surface of your eye in a 10-minute outpatient procedure. This procedure has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June of 2016, and has been available around the world for several years prior to approval in the US.

The Raindrop procedure is not covered by insurance.
We’ve partnered with medical financing lenders like Care Credit to provide
an easy way to finance your vision correction procedure. We also accept FSA and HSA Plans.

Raindrop® is a small, transparent disk called an inlay. It’s made of approximately 80% water and from material similar to a soft contact lens. It is the size of a pinhead, and actually resembles a tiny water droplet. It has been bioengineered to facilitate the transport of nutrients and fluid to the eye.

During a 10-minute outpatient procedure, Raindrop is placed just beneath the surface of the eye to change the shape and improve near vision. Most patients return to normal activity after the Raindrop procedure. And, gain 5 lines of near vision on an eye chart without the need for reading glasses within one week and their vision continues to improve for several weeks. Patients will need to use eye drops for several months — for comfort and healing.

Raindrop works by gently changing the shape of the cornea. One Raindrop Near Vision Inlay is placed in the cornea of the non-dominant eye. Both eyes work together to create one image. The near vision is improved in the Raindrop eye, while the distance is slightly affected. With both eyes working together, there is not a compromise for distance vision and patients still have a significant improvement in near vision.

It is easily done in the doctor’s LASIK suite and takes about 10-minutes. Patients should be driven home after the procedure and should take it easy the rest of the day. Most patients return to normal activity the next day. Most people who have had the Raindrop implanted see an improvement in their near vision by one week and it continues to improve for several weeks. Patients need to use eye drops for several months after the procedure for comfort and healing.

Raindrop is intended to be a long-term solution, but if for any reason you need it removed, it can be easily done.
